Billy Schuler is a 27-year-old forward from Allentown, N.J. Schuler played college soccer at UNC Chapel Hill from 2008-2011 and scored 29 goals in 79 appearances. The forward helped the Tar Heels win the NCAA Championship in 2011. Following his impressive collegiate career, Schuler joined Swedish club Hammarby from 2012-13, making 26 appearances. He returned to the U.S. in 2015 and spent time with the San Jose Earthquakes and Whitecaps FC II, before joining NCFC in 2016. This season, Schuler has scored four goals and recorded an assist across all competitions.
1.What’s it like playing soccer in the Triangle area again, a place where you’ve had so much success in the past?
“It’s cool. I was in school in Chapel Hill, so I didn’t make it up to Raleigh too much but Raleigh is awesome. It’s a nice, up and coming city. There’s a lot to do, so I really enjoy it.”
2.You’ve scored four goals in your last four matches and recorded an assist. What are you doing right now that’s giving you good form?
“Just working hard and getting into positions to score. Coming into the game is different than starting so obviously when you come into a match you want to make an impact and luckily, I have. Just hard work on the training ground.”
3.What is your favorite restaurant in the area?
“I’ve been to Tazza Kitchen in Cameron Village a lot so I think for me that’s my favorite”.
4.What do you like to do when you aren’t playing soccer?
“A lot of resting. We play a lot of ping-pong before and after training. Besides that, just hanging out. Now that it’s getting nice out, Lake Raleigh is just a walk away”.
5.Word on the street is you’re a big Harry Potter fan, so what is your favorite book and character from the series?
“Oh man that’s tough. I think Prisoner of Azkaban could be my favorite. That and Half-Blood Prince. I think the fan favorite for most people is probably Sirius Black and I’d have to agree. I would say my personal favorite is Sirius or maybe Snape.
Billy Schuler and the rest of the NCFC squad returns to Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park to face the Charlotte Independence in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31.
