The Carolina RailHawks advanced to the Fifth Round in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after a thrilling shootout against Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA. The RailHawks converted three kicks during the shootout to top the two for Chivas USA and will host the winner of the LA Galaxy and Arizona United on Tuesday, June 24th at WakeMed Soccer Park.
“It was a great evening and great crowd,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “It was great to get another victory for the home crowd. Scott (Goodwin) was outstanding all night long and then stepped up again during the shootout. The guys should a lot of character throughout the match.”
At the end of regulation the score was tied 1 to 1 and the match was sent into two 15 minute overtime periods. In the 29th minute, Zack Schilawski received a pass from Nazmi Albadawi at the top of the box. With his first touch, Schilawski touched the ball past the Chivas USA defenders and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for the lead. Chivas USA pulled a goal back when Ryan Finley headed in a cross in the 40th minute of play.
RailHawks goalkeeper Scott Goodwin replaced injured starter Akira Fitzgerald and showed his ability early in the match. In the 27th minute, Goodwin made a diving save on Chivas USA midfielder Leandro Barrera unleashed a shot inside the 6-yard box. Goodwin came up big once more in the decisive penalty shootout. Chivas USA made two out of their seven attempts during the shootout, with Goodwin saving three of the attempts.
The RailHawks will now host the LA Galaxy-Arizona United winner in the Fifth Round of the U.S. Open Cup.
