The Carolina RailHawks have announced the signing of midfielder Floyd Franks to a multi-year deal, pending USSF approval.  Franks returns to the RailHawks after a transfer to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer saw him depart during the preseason prior to the 2012 NASL season.  In two seasons (2010-2011) with the RailHawks, Franks accumulated 4,406 minutes, 2 goals, and 6 assists while making 51 starts in 57 league and playoff appearances.

“It’s exciting to add a player of Floyd’s ability to the team at this point in the season,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke.  “Floyd is a very versatile player who can play across the midfield and on the back line. His familiarity with the club and his time with us in preseason, we expect for him to settle in nicely.”

Franks played his college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he finished his career with 18 goals and 15 assists in 71 appearances and was a two-time All-Conference USA selection and an All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection.  The 10th overall pick in the 2006 MLS Supplemental Draft, Franks has gone on to play for the Chicago Fire, Cleveland City Stars, Blokhus FC of Denmark, and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Franks joins a talented RailHawks roster looking to continue its strong play into the second half of the season.  The RailHawks have 7 wins, 1 tie, and 2 losses over their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Head Coach Dewan Bader and the RailHawks U-23’s brought home their second USASA National Cup Region III Championship in as many years over the weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The U-23’s did so in convincing fashion, winning all four games by no fewer than four goals. Bader will now lead his side to Chicago, Illinois on July 20 where they will look to defend last year’s National Cup Finals Championship.

The RailHawks U-23’s beat teams from Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas with a staggering goal differential of plus-24, while posting four shutouts in their four matches. The U-23’s continues its success in competitions while sticking to its core mission of player development in a professional environment.

“We’ve said from day one our ultimate goal is to win another national championship, but the reality is this is development program,” said Bader. “We’re here to make the players better; we’re here to make them better for their colleges; we’re here to prepare them for the pros when that time comes.”

The U-23’s impact is evidenced also by the surrounding college soccer programs’ success. Five player from last summer’s U-23’s side were a part of UNC’s 2011 college national championship season.

With more than 20 former players from the program now playing at the pro level, eight of whom are now on the RailHawks senior team, the U-23’s continues to give its players exposure to professional coaches and organizations. The squad will head to Washington D.C. this weekend to play the D.C. United U-23’s coached by former MLS star Jaime Moreno at RFK Stadium. After a visit to the nation’s capital, the U-23’s will return to Wake Med Soccer Park to host D.C. United U-23’s and NPSL South All Stars on July 7 and July 14 respectively. The RailHawks U-23’s consists of men’s college soccer players from various programs, mostly consisting of North Carolina players. It gives college players the opportunity to experience a professional atmosphere and compete at a high level during the summer while also giving the RailHawks coaching staff and opportunity to scout the area’s top college talent. The U-23’s play an exhibition schedule including the RailHawks senior team, the Richmond Kickers, NPSL All-Stars and DC United’s U-23’s in addition to competing in the USASA Men’s U-23 tournament. Their season runs from May through July.

“Every year the guys look forward to being a part of the USASA Regional and National tournament and our first goal is to return home with a championship,” said Bader. ”Another important aspect is the opportunity to continue our players’ development by competing in a high-level tournament against strong competition from around the country.”

The RailHawks U-23’s have produced dozens of professional soccer players over the past several years. Players have gone on to play both domestically, MLS and NASL, and abroad, in countries such as England, Sweden and Denmark.

Playing with the RailHawks U-23’s also gives players exposure to the RailHawks professional side and the opportunity to train. Many current RailHawks senior players started out and showcased their ability with RailHawks U-23’s, including goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald, defenders Austen King (CASL) and Justin Willis (CASL), midfielders Tommy Drake (TFC) and Nick Millington (CASL), and forwards Brian Ackley (CASL), Brian Shriver and Zack Schilawski (CASL). U-23’s serve as a development ladder connecting strong youth soccer programs in the area and the RailHawks professional side.

Midfielder Chris Nurse returns to the RailHawks following two World Cup Qualifying matches with the Guyana National Team. Nurse captained the Golden Jaguars in the Third Round of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying against regional powers, Mexico and Costa Rica. Guyana came away from the first series of games with zero points after 3-1 and 4-0 defeats against Mexico and Costa Rica, respectively.

Nurse and Guyana opened up the Third Round of qualifying against Mexico on June 8th in the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.  Mexico boasted a lineup with international stars Giovani Dos Santos and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two first half goals in a four-minute span.  The two teams traded own-goals in the second half as Guyana continued to put pressure on the El Tri defense.  Nurse played 90 minutes and was issued a yellow card.

In their second match of Group B, Guyana hosted Costa Rica on June 12th. The Golden Jaguars lost the match 4-0 with MLS’s Real Salt Lake designated player, Alvaro Saborio, tallying a hat-trick. Costa Rican sensation Joel Campbell registered the other goal. Nurse again registered 90 minutes for Guyana, who are playing for the first time in the Third Round of World Cup Qualifying.  

World Cup Qualifications will resume in September.  Guyana will face El Salvador home and away before hosting Mexico and traveling to Costa Rica in October.

The RailHawks will continue NASL action in Atlanta to take on the Silverbacks on June 16th at 7:30 PM ET. The match will be broadcast live at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com/live. In front of a packed house, a penalty kick in stoppage time by Juan Pablo Angel sentenced the match in favor of MLS’s Chivas USA, despite dominance by the RailHawks for most of the game. The RailHawks attempted to have another come from behind win after being down on the scoreboard in the first half off a Juan Agudelo goal. Mike Palacio scored the equalizer in the 79th minute to deadlock the game 1-1. The crowd of 7117 once again played a decisive role as the 12th man of the team.

“I’m extremely proud of the boys for the effort they put out there today. We were the better team and unfortunate circumstances at the end costs us the match,” said a proud Colin Clarke. “The fans today were great, and we hope they come back to support us. We still have a long season ahead and need the support we got over the last two weeks.”

The first half featured the excitement of Agudelo for Chivas USA and the RailHawks fast-paced passing attack, at times with as many as 8 players attacking. The MLS side was able to get ahead in the 31st minute when Laurent Courtois crossed a ball and Agudelo headed the ball towards the far post. Ray Burse showed his dominance in goal with three game saving stops in the first half.

The RailHawks started the second on the offensive. Pressure on Chivas USA’s back line allowed the RailHawks midfielders to find open spaces. Austin Da Luz, Brian Shriver, Nick Zimmerman, and Breiner Ortiz were making darting runs and serving up dangerous crosses. Zack Schilawski hit the crossbar in the 71stminute. The RailHawks found the much-deserved equalizer in the 79th minute when Palacio found the ball in the box and scored. Palacio had come into the game just one minute before scoring the goal. In stoppage time a handball inside the box gave Angel the game-winning penalty kick.

The RailHawks will play again at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday June 9th when they host Minnesota Stars FC. The RailHawks have played twice this year against the Stars FC in Minnesota. The teams opened the NASL season with the Champions Challenge that ended with a 0-0 draw. The last game, despite solid play by the RailHawks, the Stars FC won the match 2-1. Following Tuesday's exciting victory over MLS' Defending Champion L.A. Galaxy, which was seen by a sold-out crowd of close to 8,000 fans, the Carolina RailHawks will host MLS' Chivas USA in the Fourth Round of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 5th at 7:00 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park. Chivas USA won their Third Round matchup against Ventura County Fusion of the PDL 1-0 with a goal by Cesar Romero assisted by Juan Agudelo.

Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public online at www.CaroilnaRailHawks.com starting today at 6:00 PM. Tickets are expected to sell fast so fans are urged to secure their desired seats online. Season Ticket Holders as well as Flex Plan Holders can get tickets for the match ahead of the general public sale by contacting the Cruizers Box Office. Chivas USA played against Ventura County Fusion at Ventura College. The MLS side played several of their big names. Forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Juan Agudelo started for the team while MLS Veteran Alejandro Moreno entered the match in the second half. The match between the RailHawks and Chivas USA will be the second meeting between the teams. The first meeting was in 2007 and was the first victory in RailHawks franchise history.

Along with the U.S. Open Cup match on June 5th, the RailHawks return to NASL action on Saturday June 2ndat 7:00 PM when they host the league-leading Puerto Rico Islanders at WakeMed Soccer Park. Following Tuesday’s exciting victory over MLS’ Defending Champion L.A. Galaxy, which was seen by a sold-out crowd of close to 8,000 fans, the Carolina RailHawks will host MLS’ Chivas USA in the Fourth Round of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 5th at 7:00 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park. Chivas USA won their Third Round matchup against Ventura County Fusion of the PDL 1-0 with a goal by Cesar Romero assisted by Juan Agudelo.

Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public online at www.CaroilnaRailHawks.com starting today at 6:00 PM. Tickets are expected to sell fast so fans are urged to secure their desired seats online. Season Ticket Holders as well as Flex Plan Holders can get tickets for the match ahead of the general public sale by contacting the Cruizers Box Office. Pricing for the match will be the standard pricing for RailHawks regular season home matches, starting at only $10.  

Chivas USA played against Ventura County Fusion at Ventura College. The MLS side played several of their big names. Forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Juan Agudelo started for the team while MLS Veteran Alejandro Moreno entered the match in the second half. The match between the RailHawks and Chivas USA will be the second meeting between the teams. The first meeting was in 2007 and was the first victory in RailHawks franchise history.

Along with the U.S. Open Cup match on June 5th, the RailHawks return to NASL action on Saturday June 2ndat 7:00 PM when they host the league-leading Puerto Rico Islanders at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Carolina RailHawks rallied from behind to score two second half goals to defeat MLS’ LA Galaxy 2-1 with goals from Ty Shipalane and Brian Shriver. The largest crowd in RailHawks history filled WakeMed Soccer Park on Tuesday evening for the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round matchup between the Carolina RailHawks and MLS Defending Champion LA Galaxy. In the first half, the Galaxy jumped ahead when Pat Noonan scored off an assist by Chad Barrett. In the 75th minute, the RailHawks found the equalizer through substitute Shipalane. In the 88th minute, the RailHawks scored when Shriver found the end of a Shipalane pass to put the RailHawks in the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

The RailHawks went on the offensive early in the first half but were unable to crack the Galaxy’s defense. It was the Galaxy who struck first. A pass from Austen King was intercepted and a pass quickly fed to Barrett, whose cross found Noonan in the box. Noonan buried to the ball in the back of the net sending the Galaxy to a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the addition of Shipalane energized the RailHawks attack and would lead the RailHawks to find the equalizer.  Zack Schilawski found Shipalane open on the right side of the field and with great footwork, the South African was able to beat the Galaxy defense and put the ball close to the far post. It was Schilawski’s third assist in two Open Cup matches for the RailHawks. In the 88th minute, Shipalane again made a darting run on the right to and crossed the ball to Shriver who pushed it in for the 2-1. It was Shriver’s fifth goal in U.S. Open Cup play.

The RailHawks will wait for the winner of the matchup tonight between MLS’ Chivas USA and PDL´s Ventura County Fusion to know the rival for the match at 7:00PM on Tuesday June 5th.
