The Carolina RailHawks have announced the signing of forward Zack Schilawski, who will join an already explosive offense.  Schilawski played for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons before being selected by New England Revolution with the 9th overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. A native of Cary, NC, Schilawski is a former member of the RailHawks U-23’s and the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL).

Schilawski played for Wake Forest University where he was a key part of the team that won the 2007 NCAA College Cup. He scored the game-winning goal against Ohio State in the final that gave the Demon Deacons the national championship.  After an outstanding career that included 99 appearances, 40 goals and 20 assists, Schilawski entered the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

The 9th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, Schilawski spent two seasons with the New England Revolution. Among his MLS achievements, Schilawski became the first rookie in MLS history to score a hat trick in his home debut. He also became the third rookie of all time to score a hat trick. In his two seasons with the Revolution, Schilawski appeared in 50 MLS matches.

“Zack is a great player with a great ability to score goals. He is a proven striker with success at every level and a lot of game experience in MLS,” said Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He will fit in nicely with our offense. We are lucky to have him come home and play for the RailHawks.”

Schilawski and the rest of the RailHawks return to WakeMed Scocer Park for a two-game home stand to face expansion-side San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday April 28th and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Wednesday May 2nd.  Both matches will kickoff at 7:00pm.  The first 500 fans to the April 28th match will receive a free cooler bag courtesy of Wake Orthopeadic.  On May 2, the RailHawks will host the 4th Annual Taste of the Triangle presented by R.A. Mark Abbott, the architect of MLS and the current President of Major League Soccer, David Downs, Commissioner of NASL, and Aaron Davidson, Vice President of Traffic Sports came to the Triangle on Thursday to discuss the future of professional soccer, specifically as it relates to the Triangle area.

Fans came to Backyard Bistro to ask questions relating to the state of the MLS, NASL, and the RailHawks. Dean Linke, voice of the RailHawks, was the moderator for the event. The panel fielded a variety of questions discussing expansion of both leagues, the relationship between both leagues, and others.

To close out the Fan Forum, RailHawks President Curt Johnson introduced a new RailHawks tradition with the presentation of the Conductor Scarf for all three guests. “This year we will recognize extraordinary leadership and work on behalf of the sport of soccer in the Triangle with a Conductor Scarf,” said Curt Johnson.

Following the Fan Forum, business leaders, community leaders, and political figures participated in a reception for the guests of honor. The event helped show the area’s commitment to soccer and highlight the economic growth and community development in the area.

Finally, a media roundtable and time for interviews allowed reporters to ask President Abbott, Commissioner Downs, and Aaron Davidson additional questions and close out a great day.

“We came today to learn about soccer in this community and come away with a great feeling,” Abbott said following the events. “Based on what we saw today, the RailHawks have a lot of fan, business community, and media support.”

The Carolina RailHawks will host three key professional soccer leaders and facilitate an open discussion on the future of professional soccer in the Triangle. Mark Abbott, President of Major League Soccer and key decision maker on the MLS Expansion Committee, Aaron Davidson, Vice-President of Traffic Sports (RailHawks Owners), and David Downs, Commissioner of the North American Soccer League, will be participating.  The events will take place on Thursday, April 12th.

The day will kick off with a Fan Forum at Backyard Bistro.  The RailHawks will be hosting a pre-event tent party outside the restaurant at noon with lunch specials featuring Backyard Bistro’s award winning North Carolina Bar-B-Que. The Fan Forum, which will be open to the public, will begin at 1:00 p.m. and give fans of the beautiful game the opportunity to ask questions and share their opinions with these key leaders.  The Fan Forum will be followed by an invite-only reception with business, community and soccer leaders. The day will conclude with a media roundtable discussion and opportunities for 1-on-1 interviews at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Mark Abbott is the architect of the MLS business plan and was the first employee of MLS in 1993.  As President, Abbott oversees all business operations for MLS and Soccer United Marketing. Abbott, along with Commissioner Don Garber, serves as MLS’ primary contact for discussions with potential investors and expansion cities.

Aaron Davidson is the Vice-President of Traffic Sports, a sports conglomerate headquartered in Brazil with US headquarters in Miami, Florida. In January 2011 Traffic became the owner of the Carolina RailHawks. Davidson has been an instrumental figure in the launching of the NASL as the United States sole second division professional league and its sanctioning approval from the US Soccer Federation.

Commissioner David Downs is one of the key drivers for the growth of the NASL, overseeing the day-to-day operations and leading the league’s expansion. Prior to joining the NASL, Downs served as the Executive Director for the USA Bid Committee in US Soccer’s bid for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup.  As a 30 year executive in the broadcast industry with ABC Sports and Univision Communications, Downs was a key figure in the successful negotiations for the U.S. television rights for the World Cup tournaments from 1994 through 2014.

“It is timely and important to spark discussions between the Triangle business community, passionate fans of soccer, media and these key leaders of professional soccer. The Carolina RailHawks announced the transfer of midfielder Floyd Franks to Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC pending USSF and ITC approval. As per club policy, details of the transfer will not be released. Franks will join eight other former RailHawks currently playing in MLS.  Signed in 2010, Franks logged 3,981 minutes in 50 appearances over his two seasons.  With Franks, the RailHawks experienced their two best seasons with a league finals appearance in 2010 and the NASL Regular Season Championship in 2011.

As a member of the NASL and a second division club since its inception in 2007, the RailHawks have continued to focus on the development of players, coaches, and front office staff.  Franks becomes the 16thperson from the RailHawks organization to move directly to a higher level. Four of the twelve players have included a transfer fee.

Franks will join eight other former RailHawks currently playing in MLS.  Signed in 2010, Franks logged 3,981 minutes in 50 appearances over his two seasons.  With Franks, the RailHawks experienced their two best seasons with a league finals appearance in 2010 and the NASL Regular Season Championship in 2011.

As a member of the NASL and a second division club since its inception in 2007, the RailHawks have continued to focus on the development of players, coaches, and front office staff.  Franks becomes the 16thperson from the RailHawks organization to move directly to a higher level. Four of the twelve players have included a transfer fee.

The Carolina RailHawks defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Sunday afternoon in a penalty kick shootout.  The match finished 2-2 in regular time and the RailHawks secured the win 4-2 in PK’s.  The RailHawks faced off against MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the 4th Annual Hilton Garden Inn Community Shield Match at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The RailHawks struck first in the 6th minute when a Nick Zimmerman corner was flickd on by Brian Ackley and found Amir Lowery open to head in the go-ahead goal. After the opening goal, Vancouver increased their defensive pressure hoping to create scoring opportunities.  Akira Fitzgerald made his first start for the RailHawks and was able to keep the ball out of the back of the net with ease.

In the 49th minute Davide Chiumiento delivered a cross that Long Tan placed a precision header past Fitzgerald. Over the next several minutes Fitzgerald displayed his skill on two impressive saves from former RailHawks player Matt Watson and Chiumiento to keep the game level at 1-1.

In the 71st minute Brian Shriver finished a rebound after some great work by Nick Zimmerman that resulted in a rebound in front of the goal. The goal was scored during Planet Smoothie’s magic minute resulting in every fan in attendance receiving a free 20 oz. smoothie with their game ticket. In the 90th minute Chiumiento scored the equalizer to force the penalty shootout.

During the shootout, Fitzgerald came up big with a stop on the third penalty kick. Ty Shipalane calmly stepped up as the fourth RailHawks kicker and converted the penalty kick for the win. Sam Stockley, Tommy Drake, Cory Miller, and Shipalane all converted their penalty kicks for the RailHawks.

“Today I saw a team that is obviously less than two weeks into preseason, but a team that did very well, showed a lot of promise,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We had great performances by young, inexperienced kids. We have a lot to build on, a lot to work on but overall I’m very pleased with today’s match.”

The Carolina RailHawks have announced the appointment of Dewan Bader, Greg Shields, Nic Platter and John Bradford as assistants to head coach Colin Clarke for the 2012 season.  Shields and Platter will have dual roles as players and coaches.

Dewan Bader enters his third year as assistant coach for the RailHawks and head coach of the RailHawks U-23’s.  Bader is the director of coaching for Triangle Futbol Club, where he oversees all programs in the 60-team organization. Bader has also worked with the U-23 program for four years, where he coached the 2011 team to the USASA National Championship.

Greg Shields returns to provide leadership on the squad as a player and help other players develop as a coach.  The Scottish defender had a season-ending surgery last year but is now back and healthy with the team. He has appeared in 30 matches for the RailHawks since joining the team in 2009. He came to Carolina having played in the English Premier League with Charlton Athletic as well as in the Scottish Premier League for Glasgow Rangers, Kilmarnock, and Dunfermline.

Nic Platter comes to the RailHawks from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Platter is an accomplished goalkeeper in his seventh year of playing professionally. He played collegiate soccer at the University of California, Davis, where he is still considered one of the best goalkeepers in the university’s history. Platter will play an instrumental role not only in games for the RailHawks, but also in practice. He will double as the goalkeeper coach, and work to groom the younger goalkeepers.

John Bradford rounds out the coaching staff. Bradford currently works for nationally recognized CASL, where he is the Director of Classic – Boys Division. He has a great understanding of the game and will be a great asset to the RailHawks this season. Also, Bradford serves as a connection between youth teams and the professional level.

“I’m delighted to have such a strong group of coaches to work with. Their experience and relationships with the players will certainly help us become a better team as the season progresses,” said head coach Colin Clarke. “The assistant coaches did a fantastic job in my absence and we are ready to face Vancouver this weekend.”

The reigning NASL Golden Boot and MVP will join former RailHawks Coach Martin Rennie and assistant coach Paul Ritchie in Vancouver.
