One of America’s most exciting soccer players returns to the pitch at WakeMed Soccer Park.  Midfielder Tiyiselani Shipalane, known for his blazing speed and ankle breaking step-overs, has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Carolina RailHawks.

“Tiyi has been an integral piece in the RailHawks success on and off the field,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke.  “Through his hard work he has become one of the most exciting soccer players in America.  I know our fans will be excited to see him and the team return to the field in Spring 2014.”

Shipalane, a native of South Africa, became a fan favorite when he first joined the RailHawks in 2010, but his celebrity rose on May 29, 2012 when Shipalane scored the equalizer and assisted the game winning goal against the LA Galaxy (video, goal at 4:35 mark).  Since that match, Shipalane has continued his heroism with game-winning or game-tying goals and assist, including a jaw-dropping finish against FC Edmonton (video).

Since joining the RailHawks, Shipalane has amassed 3,152 minutes over 55 appearances and scored 14 goals.  Shipalane’s previous stops include time with Major League Soccer’s DC United, Harrisburg City Islanders and the University of Pretoria (South Africa).  In 2012, Shipalane was awarded the Summit Hospitality Community Service Award for his work in the Triangle Community.

Capital Area RailHawks Academy player, Conor Donovan, was recently chosen to join the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team on a trip to Italy.  In their first match against Hellas Verona Primavera, Donovan made his debut for the U-20's after a wealth of appearance for the U-17 and U-18 U.S. MNT.  The U.S. U-20's will finish their 10-day training camp with two more friendly matches.

In 2013, Donovan  joined the RailHawks professional squad as an amatuer player and was in the 18-man squad for the RailHawks season finale on November 2nd.  Donovan and fellow U-17/18 C.A. RailHawks Academy members earned the opportunity to train with the professional side during the 2013 season and be exposed to a professional training environment.

The Carolina RailHawks, in conjunction with Summit Hospitality Group, announced the winners of the 2013 Summit Hospitality Community Service Award.  Summit Hospitality is the corporate sponsor of the community outreach efforts of the Carolina RailHawks.  This is Summit's 5th year sponsoring the RailHawks community outreach efforts.  The mission of the RailHawks community outreach activities is to actively reach out to young people in the Triangle community and promote an active healthy lifestyle, teach life skills and help build self esteem.

In 2013, the RailHawks have made well over 300 hundred community outreach player appearances that reached over 100,000 people.  Appearances included elementary schools, middle schools, hospitals, YMCAs, Boys & Girls Club, Durham Rescue Mission, inner city youth outreach organizations, local festivals, local fundraisers, local soccer clubs, etc.

Summit Hospitality recognized three RailHawks’ players at the RailHwaks' regular season finale for their community service efforts during the course of the 2013 season. The winners were Nick Addlery, Austin da Luz and Jordan Graye.  Each recipient received a three-night stay at a Summit hotel in Charlotte, two rounds of golf in the area, dinner for two, and Charlotte Bobcats tickets.

After a 15 goal season and capturing the North American Soccer League (NASL) Golden Boot Award, RailHawks’ forward Brian Shriver has been named to the 2013 NASL Best XI.  The NASL Best XI is voted on by the NASL coaches.

Shriver’s selection to the league’s Best XI marks the third consecutive year that a RailHawks player has been named to the NASL’s yearly recognition.  Shriver totaled 16 goals in 2013, including U.S. Open Cup play, pushing the RailHawks’ striker to second all-time on the RailHawks goal scoring list with 27 goals.

North American Soccer League Unveils 2013 Best XI

ATLANTA, Ga. (November 7, 2013) – The North American Soccer League has unveiled its 2013 Best XI, which was selected by the coaches of the eight teams that competed in the 2013 NASL season.

The announcement comes on the eve of NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 when the Atlanta Silverbacks and New York Cosmos clash at Silverbacks Park at 7.30pm ET live on ESPN3 in English and ESPN Deportes in Spanish.

North American Soccer League 2013 Best XI

Goalkeeper

Joe Nasco, Atlanta Silverbacks: Played 19 games and earned seven victories, while posting four shutouts.  The native of Kissimmee, Fla. earned NASL Co-Player of the Week honors, along with two Team of the Week accolades, as he helped the Silverbacks to this year’s NASL Spring title.

Defenders

Aaron Pitchkolan, Minnesota United FC: The Aurora Colo. native, who also played in the midfield, saw action in 20 matches in 2013 and scored two goals and added an assist.  He played a key role on Minnesota’s defense and was selected to the NASL Team of the Week three times.

Martyn Lancaster, Atlanta Silverbacks: The captain played 23 games and scored once.  The English born stopper was also recipient of Player of the Week honors and orchestrated a defense that was key in the team’s run to the Spring title. 

Albert Watson, FC Edmonton: Saw action in 20 matches and had one assist during his stellar performance for the Eddies defense that surrendered just one goal per game in both the Spring and Fall seasons.  The native of Northern Ireland was also named to the Team of the Week six times.

Midfielders

Luke Mulholland, Tampa Bay Rowdies: A nine-time NASL Team of the Week selection who saw action in 25 games for the Rowdies and finished with 11 goals.  The English born also dished out seven assists which was second-best in the league.  He was selected twice as Player of the Month in April and October.

Miguel Ibarra, Minnesota United FC: Played all 26 games for United and scored once, while dishing out three assists.  The native of Lancaster, California, was selected to the Team of the Week on three occasions.

Richard Menjivar, Atlanta Silverbacks: El Salvadorian international saw action in 21 games with Silverbacks and notched two goals while dishing out two assists.  He was named to the Team of the Week four times.

Marcos Senna, New York Cosmos: A Two-time Player of the Week winner had 13 appearances for the Cosmos in the Fall Season.  The former Spanish international scored five goals and had two assists, while also being a five-time Team of the Week selectee.

Forwards

Georgi Hristov, Tampa Bay Rowdies: Led the Rowdies in scoring with 12 and was atop the assist category in the NASL with eight.  Chosen to the Team of the Week on seven occasions and once named as Player of the Week, the Bulgarian played 22 games in 2013.

Brian Shriver, Carolina RailHawks: Was the NASL Golden Boot winner as he ended the year with a league-leading 15 goals.  The native of Clearwater, Fla. played 22 times and added an assist to his offensive totals with the RailHawks.  A three-time Player of the Week winner, he was selected to the Team of the Week on seven occasions.

Hans Denissen, San Antonio Scorpions:  Scored 12 goals and recorded out two assists in 21 games with the Scorpions.  A Player of the Week and Month winner, the Dutch striker also made the Team of the Week seven times.

With a 2-1 victory over the San Antonio Scorpions, the Carolina RailHawks captured their second Woosnam Cup title in the past three years.

"Named in honor of Phil Woosnam, former player and longtime commissioner of the original North American Soccer League from 1969-1983, the Woosnam Cup will be awarded to the points champion of the present day NASL each season. As the supporters of this league, we believe it is very important to properly recognize the best club throughout the entire year. The current NASL is still in it’s formative years, and with the league format inevitably subject to change as it grows, a trophy for the points champion is our way to honor the best team each year in a consistent way."

The first came in 2011, when the RailHawks ran away with the regular season crown after a 17W-3T-8L record.  That squad was led by Golden Boot and NASL MVP winner, Etienne Barbara, after his record setting season. Barbara scored 20 goals and tallied a league-high 8 assist.

The 2013 Cup, was a hard fought campaign in an NASL filled with parity.  The difference in points between first-place and last-place was 17 points, compared to the 38 point difference in 2011.  This year's RailHawks were led by NASL Golden Boot winner, Brian Shriver, who tied Nick Zimmerman's 2012 campaign with the second most goals scored in a season (16 through NASL and U.S. Open Cup play).  Shriver currently sits second on the RailHawks all-time scoring list with 27 goals scored, 2 behind Barbara's 29 goals.

The American marksman led the race for the Golden Boot heading into the final weekend of regular season action and scored twice to seal a come from behind 2-1 RailHawks victory over the San Antonio Scorpions. 

His penalty kick finish and late winner ensured Carolina remained unbeaten throughout 2013 at WakeMed Soccer Park in competitive games – an impressive 15-game streak – and also won him the NASL Player of Week 14 award.

Shriver opened his 2013 NASL account at home in the second week of the Spring Season with a stunning 20-yard free kick over the wall that dipped beneath the cross bar in a 2-1 win over FC Edmonton.  The goal is among the contenders for the NASL Goals of the Season which fans can vote for at www.NASL.com.

He scored a brace against both Fort Lauderdale and San Antonio to fire the RailHawks to the top of the table and Shriver to the top of the scoring charts with five goals in four games.  With two weeks remaining in the Spring Season, a pair of goals from Shriver in the final four minutes sealed a come from behind 3-2 home win over Minnesota United FC. 

At the midway point in 2013, he was tied with Hans Denissen of the San Antonio Scorpions on eight goals, closely followed by Georgi Hristov of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Minnesota United FC striker Simone Bracalello and Atlanta Silverbacks striker Ruben Luna all with five goals to their name.

Shriver’s ninth strike of the year proved the difference against FC Edmonton as the 2013 NASL Fall Season kicked off, then he missed a penalty a week later in a draw at Atlanta as Denissen moved ahead in the Golden Boot race.  But a week later, a double strike handed the New York Cosmos their only loss of the campaign and put Shriver back in the scoring lead in a 3-0 victory.

Shriver’s twelfth strike of the year and fourth goal of the fall earned a 1-0 home win over Minnesota United FC and kept Carolina on top of the standings, extending their lead to three points over the second-placed Cosmos.

Injuries limited Shriver’s playing time during the second half of the season, and the RailHawks fell off the pace during a spell that saw them win only once in six-games.  Shriver returned and took over in the tight race for the NASL Golden Ball award with his 13th goal of the season in a 4-0 destruction of Atlanta, moving him one ahead of Hans Denissen of the San Antonio Scorpions and Georgi Hristov of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. 

On the final weekend of the regular season he calmly slotted home a penalty and then scored the winning goal – his 15th of 2013 – to defeat the San Antonio Scorpions 2-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Carolina RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke has added 17-year old defender Conor Donovan to the Carolina RailHawks roster for their NASL finale on Saturday, November 2nd at WakeMed Soccer Park.  Donovan, from Fuquay-Varina, is a member of the U-17/18 Capital Area RailHawks of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and recently appeared for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team.

“Conor has been involved in our professional training sessions for some time,” said Clarke. “This is an opportunity that he has earned with his play on the field and dedication to the game.  We are excited to give Conor this opportunity.”

Donovan, who has appeared in 35 matches with the U-17 and U-18 U.S. Men’s National Teams, is expected to be included in the 18-man roster on Saturday.  During his time with the U.S. Youth National Teams, Donovan has participated in the CONCACAF U-17 Championships in Panama and the Limoges Tournament in France with the U-18’s.  

“Conor is truly a product of our soccer community and represents all that is right about youth development in North Carolina,” said RailHawks President Curt Johnson.  “He has a bright future.”

The Capital Area RailHawks is a collaboration between the Capital Area Soccer League and the RailHawks for U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams in the U-13/14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups and is designed to attract the highest caliber players and coaches possible, regardless of their previous club affiliations. 

U-17/18 Academy players Dre Fortune and Evan Krause have also been identified as players deserving of the opportunity to train with the RailHawks professional squad and be exposed to a professional training environment. Fortune and Krause are available for selection to Saturday’s 18-man roster, but are not expected to appear.

“I’m extremely proud of this accomplishment for Conor, for the Capital Area RailHawks Academy, as well as for soccer development in our community,” said John Bradford, Capital Area RailHawks Academy Director.  “We have had several Academy players in training with the Carolina RailHawks and to have Conor selected for a match day roster with the First Team, is truly a remarkable success.  All of our players in the Capital Area RailHawks Academy have aspirations to play soccer professionally and this gives a tangible example of the Academy’s professional development pathway with the Carolina RailHawks.  I’d like to thank Coach Clarke and the Carolina RailHawks staff and administration, as well as all of the leadership in CASL for their collective, continued support of the Academy.  I’d also like to recognize Henry Gutierrez and Dewan Bader of NC Alliance Soccer Club, as they have certainly been instrumental in Conor’s development.  Best of luck to the RailHawks and Conor this Saturday as they look to remain unbeaten at home and capture the regular season championship.”

Donovan began playing soccer in the Fuquay Varina Athletic Association (FVAA) and later joined the North Carolina Alliance.  Former U.S. National Team and Major League Soccer player, Henry Gutierrez, was instrumental in his development.

Academy players are eligible to train and play with professional soccer players prior to their enrollment in college and keep their NCAA eligibility.  Fortune, Krause and Donovan were added as amateur players on the RailHawks roster prior to the roster freeze date on October 22nd.  Donovan has committed to join the NC State Wolfpack Men’s Soccer program next Fall.

Carolina RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke has added 17-year old defender Conor Donovan to the Carolina RailHawks roster for their NASL finale on Saturday, November 2nd at WakeMed Soccer Park.  Donovan, from Fuquay-Varina, is a member of the U-17/18 Capital Area RailHawks of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and recently appeared for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team.

“Conor has been involved in our professional training sessions for some time,” said Clarke. “This is an opportunity that he has earned with his play on the field and dedication to the game.  We are excited to give Conor this opportunity.”

Donovan, who has appeared in 35 matches with the U-17 and U-18 U.S. Men’s National Teams, is expected to be included in the 18-man roster on Saturday.  During his time with the U.S. Youth National Teams, Donovan has participated in the CONCACAF U-17 Championships in Panama and the Limoges Tournament in France with the U-18’s.  

“Conor is truly a product of our soccer community and represents all that is right about youth development in North Carolina,” said RailHawks President Curt Johnson.  “He has a bright future.”

The Capital Area RailHawks is a collaboration between the Capital Area Soccer League and the RailHawks for U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams in the U-13/14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups and is designed to attract the highest caliber players and coaches possible, regardless of their previous club affiliations. 

U-17/18 Academy players Dre Fortune and Evan Krause have also been identified as players deserving of the opportunity to train with the RailHawks professional squad and be exposed to a professional training environment. Fortune and Krause are available for selection to Saturday’s 18-man roster, but are not expected to appear.

The 6’2” defender has 7 caps for the Uganda National Team, including 3 appearances during the African nation’s qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
