The Carolina RailHawks defeated the Charlotte Eagles 2-0 in the Third Round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.  Goals from Nazmi Albadawi and Jun Marques Davidson sent the RailHawks to their 20th straight match unbeaten at WakeMed Soccer Park and into the Fourth Round of the knockout-style tournament to host Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA on Saturday, June 14th at 8:00pm.

“We are delighted with the result,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke.  “It was a tough night with the humidity, but we played well and we advance to the next round.  Charlotte is a very good team and made it difficult for us.  We are pleased to add the shutout.”

Albadawi opened the scoring in the 14th minute of play when his shot found the left corner of the Charlotte goal.  The strike was the first professional goal for the former RailHawks U-23’s and Raleigh-native.  Davidson capped off a strong first half for the RailHawks with a 45th minute stoppage time goal.  The two goals were all RailHawks goalkeeper Scott Goodwin needed to record the victory and shutout in his RailHawks debut.

RailHawks defender Kupono Low added to his all-time club record by recording his 200th appearance for the RailHawks since making his debut on April 21, 2007.

The Carolina RailHawks and the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team played to a 2-1 result on Tuesday night at WakeMed Soccer Park.  RailHawks goals from Aaron King and Leo Osaki led a squad comprised of RailHawks professional players and U-18 Capital Area RailHawks Academy players to the victory.  Midfielder Ian Harkes scored the U.S. U-20 Men's National lone goal on an assist from C.A. RailHawks defender Connor Donovan.

In all, 11 C.A. RailHawks Academy players took the field at WakeMed Soccer Park.  Nine played for the RailHawks (defenders DJ Mason and Harry Morton, midfielders Cody Brinkman, Steve Megaloudis, Dominic Jensen and forwards Andre Fortune and William Ramirez) and two played for the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team (defenders Connor Donovan and Caleb Duvernay).

King put the RailHawks on the board first when he recognized the U-20 MNT keeper off his line and unleashed a 50-yard shot that gave the goalkeeper little chance before striking the back of the net.  Follow the RailHawks twitter and facebook for video of the goalazo.

The second half started with a RailHawks goal from Osaki who finished off a cross for the 2-0 lead.  The U-20 MNT pulled back a goal when Donovan broke down the left flank, cut back the defender and crossed the ball into Harkes.  The Wake Forest midfielder beat the RailHawks defender and slotted the shot past RailHawks' Scott Goodwin.

The U.S. U-20's will face off against the RailHawks U-23's on Thursday, May 22nd at WakeMed Soccer Park.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.

The U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team is hosting a training camp in the Triangle area and will play matches against the Carolina RailHawks senior team and the RailHawks U-23’s. On Tuesday, May 20th the RailHawks (first team, reserves and select Capital Area RailHawks Academy players) will play the U.S. U-20 MNT in WakeMed Stadium at 7:30pm. On Thursday, May 22nd the U-23’s will play the U.S. U-20 MNT on WakeMed Soccer Park Field 2 at 6:00pm. Both games are free to the public. Concessions and merchandise will be available for purchase at both games. These games are a great opportunity for Triangle soccer fans to get a look at the great, young talent on our Youth National Team.

Displaying some of that talent on a local level, Conor Donovan continues to be an important part of the U.S. U-20 MNT. Donovan is a standout for the U-18 Capital Area RailHawks Academy and has previously been a part of U-20 training camps and matches. Donovan has shown true skill and promise in his time with the C.A. RailHawks Academy. During his busy schedule, Donovan has trained successfully with the RailHawks professional side, including registering and dressing for the RailHawks’ match against San Antonio on November 2, 2013. Shortly after that game, he was chosen to join the U.S. U-20 team on a trip to Italy. Donovan and Capital Area RailHawks teammate Caleb Duvernay will be a part of the upcoming U.S. U-20 training camp and will play against the RailHawks’ teams in their games at WakeMed Soccer Park.

RailHawks assistant coach and U-23’s Head Coach, Dewan Bader will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. U-20 MNT during the training camp. Bader has been a RailHawks’ assistant coach since 2009 and he has been in charge of the U-23’s since 2008. Colin Clarke will take charge of the U-23’s (in addition to his senior team responsibilities) while Bader works with the U.S. U-20 MNT in late May.

All three Capital Area RailHawks Academy teams were in action over the weekend. The U-17/18 squad had a dominant performance picking up two wins over the weekend. They improved their record to 16W-1L-5T, which puts them in first place in their division. They won 2-0 Saturday against NC Fusion. Dominic Jenson, and Elijah Agu picked up goals, and goalkeeper Ryan Cretens had a shutout. Dominic Jensen led the charge again Sunday, scoring one goal. His teammates, Stevie Megaloudis, and Wyatt Street, also added one goal each in route to a 3-2 victory over Charlotte Soccer Academy. The U-17/18 CA RailHawks squad hopes to continue their winning streak this weekend as they face off against the Clearwater Chargers Saturday, March 8th, and IMG Academy Sunday, March 9th.

The U-15/16 CA RailHawks went one and one over the weekend, picking up a 1-0 win Sunday over Charlotte Soccer Academy. Ryan Spaudling tallied the lone goal Sunday, while goalkeeper Vinnie Durand collected the shutout. Saturday’s game was not as successful, as the team suffered a tough 0-4 loss to NC Fusion. The U-15/16 Capital Area RailHawks will be back in action this Saturday, March 8th against the Clearwater Chargers, and again Sunday, March 9th, against IMG Academy.

The U-13/14 CA RailHawks squad returned to action over the weekend after their winter break, losing 0-2 to NC Fusion. Their next match will be on Saturday, March 15th against the Carolina Rapids.

All of the ECNL teams will be returning to action this weekend after a bye this past weekend. Saturday, March 8th, the teams will be playing Ohio Premier, and Sunday, March 9th, they will face off against Internationals SC. Game times and locations are posted below.

Mike Grella returns to the Triangle after signing with the Carolina RailHawks.  Grella, a four-year starter for Duke University Men's soccer team and former RailHawks U-23's member, returns to the United States after a five-year career in Europe.  After his senior season at Duke, the forward opted to sign with historic English club Leeds United.  Most recently, Grella played in Denmark with Viborg FF of the Danish Superliga.

A New York-native, Grella becomes the 10th current RailHawks player to have played youth or college soccer in North Carolina and the 8th to play for the RailHawks U-23's.

Grella chose to originally come to the Triangle-area to play for Duke after being named the 2004 National High School Player of the Year.  In four season with the Blue Devils, Grella scored 41 goals, best for 7th all-time on the Duke goal scoring chart.  His standout play led to numerous honors including being named to All-American (07,08) and All-ACC (06, 07, 08) teams.

A dominating 4-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1W-0T-1L, 3 pts) helped the Carolina RailHawks (1W-1T-0L, 4pts) extended their home unbeaten streak to 17 matches.  Zack Schilawski and Enzo Martinez each scored two goals to lead the RailHawks.  Former RailHawks Chris Nurse scored for Fort Lauderdale in the 47th minute.

“It was great to be back in front of the home crowd,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke.  “The crowd is a major reason why we haven’t lost in 17 straight matches.  The team played well and we were sharp in the attacking third.  Zack Schilawski played at another level tonight.”

Martinez opened the scoring in the 27th minute of play, when Cesar Elizondo drew a foul in the box.  The former RailHawks U-23’s and UNC standout, Martinez stepped up and converted the penalty kick to give the RailHawks the lead.  With the game at 2-1 after the goal from Nurse, Martinez struck again.  This time in the 72nd minute when Schilawski played Martinez into space and the midfielder converted for his second goal of the night. 

Schilawski scored his 2nd and 3rd goals of the year in the 40th and 76th minute, respectively.  On his first goal of the night Schilawski received a through ball from Tiyi Shipalane and finished the chance past the Strikers’ goalkeeper.  Schilawski’s 76th minute goal came when the forward had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper and closed out the match with his second goal of the night.

Schilawski’s two goal and one assist performance earned him the “Lonerider Growler of the Game” recognition from the Triangle Soccer Fanatics in The Depot.

Triangle Soccer Fanatics Inc. (TSF), a club supporting the growth of the fan  base for the Carolina RailHawks, as well as soccer throughout the greater Triangle region, announced today its corporate founding as a North Carolina-based nonprofit organization. In addition to supporting soccer’s growth locally, the club seeks to organize soccer fans in the Raleigh-Durham area, enhance fans’ game day experience and engage in charitable and community outreach in collaboration with the Spread Your Wings outreach organization, the charitable arm of the Carolina RailHawks.

Informally organized in 2002 by a group of local soccer fans, TSF has grown today into an independent supporters club of the Carolina RailHawks with more than 700 active participants. “When I started TSF, I had just moved to the Triangle and was simply looking for a way to connect with other locals who were equally passionate about soccer,” said W. Jarrett Campbell, TSF founder and president. “I had no idea this would grow into what it has become today.” He added, “I spoke with some of the more active members of our group and we realized that we had a great opportunity to formalize this community and harness their enthusiasm both to grow soccer support in the Raleigh-Durham area as well as to provide community outreach efforts.”

TSF is both financially and administratively independent of the Cary-based Carolina RailHawks, who compete in the North American Soccer League (NASL). “The passion that TSF brings to the stadium each game is a huge part of the enhanced atmosphere and home field advantage we have at WakeMed Soccer Park. TSF has taken a significant step for the future of their organization during the offseason, and this formalized, growing club is going to be fantastic for our fans. We look forward to working closely with the group and I encourage all our fans to get to know the new TSF,” said Curt Johnson, president of the Carolina RailHawks.

In addition to drawing on the enthusiasm of the local soccer fans, TSF has also reached out to area leaders for advice on how to grow support for soccer in the area. David Fellerath, former culture and sports editor at INDY Week, has joined TSF as an advisory board member. Fellerath, upon accepting the board appointment, said, “Around the world, supporters groups are integral to club soccer. These groups plan in-game displays of support, including songs, banners and choreographed displays known as tifo. Away from the pitch, they communicate with the club management on governance issues. In the United States, there is an emerging culture of strong fan groups in such places as San Antonio, Texas, Portland, Ore., and Washington, D.C. The incorporation of TSF is an exciting step forward for local professional soccer.”

The Carolina RailHawks are proud to present the Media & Supporters Guide for the 2014 Spring and Fall North American Soccer League (NASL) seasons.  The RailHawks are the reigning Regular Season Champions of the NASL, earning the most points throughout the Spring and Fall Seasons in 2013. The team is also in the midst of a 16-game home unbeaten streak that they will work to extend in their home opener at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.

2014 Roster Highlights
The 2014 Carolina RailHawks will be led by third-year head coach Colin Clarke. In his first two years at the helm, Clarke has led the team to immense success including winning the regular season title and reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup in 2013.  Under Clarke, the team plays a free flowing, attacking style of soccer that saw the RailHawks to a 16-game home unbeaten streak that’s yet to be broken.

Curt Johnson, President of the Carolina RailHawks, is a Raleigh native and grew up playing locally for CASL before playing for NC State. His local ties make him aptly suited to lead the RailHawks and under his leadership the club strives to make the RailHawks North Carolina’s soccer team by focusing on developing local talent and signing players with local ties.  This year, the RailHawks have 8 players that fit that description including Enzo Martinez, Zack Schilawski, Akira Fitzgerald, and adding more.

Last year, Martinez, a former UNC Men’s Soccer standout, was on loan with the RailHawks from MLS club Real Salt Lake.  Martinez assisted UNC to three straight NCAA College Cups and last year scored 3 goals for the RailHawks in just 15 appearances. Schilawski and Fitzgerald were members of the Wake Forest University Men’s Soccer Team which won the 2007 National Championship at the RailHawks’ home field, WakeMed Soccer Park, with Schilawski scoring a the final penalty in the shootout that gave Wake Forest the championship.

Additionally, this year the RailHawks have three longtime veterans returning:  Nick Zimmerman, Kupono Low, and Tiyi Shipalane. Zimmerman was a mainstay in the 2012 RailHawks team leading scoring with 16 goals, but did not play in 2013 after suffering an injury. He returns to the field this season looking to make a big impact. Low returns for his eighth season. He is the only player to have played for the inaugural RailHawks team in 2007 and has earned the distinction “Mr. RailHawk” from the fans having made 193 appearances. Shipalane is considered by many to be the most exciting player in American soccer and has been with the RailHawks since 2010. Shipalane became a fan favorite in 2012 by scoring once and assisting a second goal that allowed the RailHawks to defeat the defending MLS Champion LA Galaxy in 2012. His speed and attacking mindset add excitement to all of the games he is a part of.

Finally, Jun Marques Davidson, a former RailHawk, returns to the team following two years with the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS. During his time in the MLS, Marques Davidson was one of the most accurate passers in the league completing over 85% of passes.  Previously he also has over 100 appearances in the J-League, Japan’s premier division of professional soccer.

Season Format
The NASL Season is broken into two distinct seasons. The first begins in April and runs through early June with the second beginning in July. The break between seasons this year coincides with the 2014 World Cup taking place in Brazil. Players from across the world will be called to represent their country in the month long tournament resulting in a pause in domestic league play.

This year, the postseason format has been adjusted to include four teams. First, the team with the most points during each of the two seasons will advance to “The Championship.” Points are awarded to teams based on game results with a win earning three points, a draw earning one point and a loss earning zero points.  The two teams who win each season will be joined in the Championship by the two teams with the best remaining overall record across both seasons for a playoff taking place in November.

Additionally, throughout the season the RailHawks will participate in the U.S. Open Cup, a knockout tournament that allows local amateur teams all the way through Major League Soccer teams to participate. Last year, the RailHawks defeated the then-reigning MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy as well as MLS club Chivas USA to earn a berth to the quarterfinals in Salt Lake City where they eventually fell to the 2013 MLS Cup Finalist Real Salt Lake.  The tournament kicks off later this year with the opportunity for the RailHawks to host more high profile competition in June.

The Supporters’ Matchday Experience
The Carolina RailHawks matchday experience is tailored for all fans of the game. This year, fans will experience new upgrades to WakeMed Soccer Park, in addition to those installed last year, including a high resolution video board on the south end of the stadium to make sure fans never miss any of the action.

The RailHawks will bring back several festivals throughout the year including the Sixth Annual Taste of the Triangle, Soktoberfest Home Brew Contest, a Pig Pickin’, Latin Fest, and others. In addition to those pre-game festivals that RailHawks have become known for, the RailHawks will host the RailHawks Pre-Game Party Series that includes live music provided by Durham’s own ReverbNation.com, which provides over 3.45 million music professionals with the tools to promote their music. The RailHawks Pre-Game Party Series will include local musicians showcasing their talents in Lot C located near the stadium. The concert will offer fans a centralized tailgate location to enjoy live music and camaraderie before enjoying the match.

Seating options at WakeMed Soccer Park are also personalized for fans of all ages and interests. The Depot(Sections 309 – 310) offers the RailHawks most enthusiastic fans the opportunity to display their passion. The Depot is led and organized by the Triangle Soccer Fanatics (TSF), a group of passionate, local soccer fans who bring the soccer supporters culture, which is growing across the nation, to WakeMed Soccer Park. This year, the Depot will be joined by the 12th Man (Sections 307 – 308) for fans that would like to be near the excitement of the Depot. All four sections are adult recommended sections.

In addition to the Depot, WakeMed Soccer Park offers a variety of suites, party decks and the exclusive Coke Party Box for corporate sponsors or large parties. 2014 World Cup
This summer, soccer supporters’ attention will turn toward Brazil as 32 nations vie to be named the best. The month-long tournament kicks off on June 12 with the final match on July 13.  The United States Men’s National Team has earned a spot in the competition playing matches against Ghana, Portugal, and Germany during the group stage in an attempt to reach the knockout stages. During that time, all U.S. domestic leagues will be coming together to support the U.S. Men’s National Team.

As fans turn their eyes to Brazil, locally the RailHawks will be hosting watch parties and offering a unique expertise on the sport and the tournament. RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke offers a firsthand perspective of the tournament having participated for his native Northern Ireland in the 1986 competition – even scoring a goal.

The Depot is led and organized by the Triangle Soccer Fanatics (TSF), a group of passionate, local soccer fans who bring the soccer supporters culture, which is growing across the nation, to WakeMed Soccer Park. This year, the Depot will be joined by the 12th Man (Sections 307 – 308) for fans that would like to be near the excitement of the Depot. All four sections are adult recommended sections.

This summer, soccer supporters’ attention will turn toward Brazil as 32 nations vie to be named the best. The month-long tournament kicks off on June 12 with the final match on July 13.  The United States Men’s National Team has earned a spot in the competition playing matches against Ghana, Portugal, and Germany during the group stage in an attempt to reach the knockout stages. During that time, all U.S. domestic leagues will be coming together to support the U.S. Men’s National Team.

As fans turn their eyes to Brazil, locally the RailHawks will be hosting watch parties and offering a unique expertise on the sport and the tournament. RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke offers a firsthand perspective of the tournament having participated for his native Northern Ireland in the 1986 competition – even scoring a goal.

Jun Marques Davidson returns to the Carolina RailHawks after spending two seasons in Major League Soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps. 

In 2013, the Japanese-American midfielder was one of the most accurate passers in Major League Soccer, completing 85.75% of his passes.  Davidson’s passing accuracy ranked 9th among MLS players attempting at least 750 passes.  Originally joining the RailHawks in 2010, Davidson appeared in 23 matches and helped the team to the USSF-D2 NASL Conference Title. 

“It’s not every day that you are able to add a player with the experience of Jun,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke.  “He has a wealth of experience in the J-League and MLS and fits in well with the rest of our squad.”

In two seasons with Vancouver, Davidson appeared in 54 matches and played 4,436 minutes.  Davidson arrived in Carolina, after an extensive playing background in the J-League, appearing in 133 regular season matches.
