Defender Kupono Low will return for his 8th season with the Carolina RailHawks in 2014. Joining the RailHawks for their first season in 2007, Low has continued to be a mainstay in the starting lineup.
“We are glad to welcome Kupono back for his 8th season with the club,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “He’s been a staple on the back line for years and is just as important for the club off the field. Still a top player in the league, he brings knowledge of the league and experience that is valuable.”
Low earned the designation of ‘Mr. RailHawk” from fans for making a club record of 193 appearances. The Hawaiian has earned All-League honors four times and has been named the RailHawks’ Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Despite a knee injury in 2010 that caused him to miss the first 22 matches of the season, Low has played at least 25 matches in each season with the RailHawks.
The last remaining player on the RailHawks roster from the inaugural 2007 squad, Low started the first match and scored the franchise’s first goal on April 21, 2007. The 35-year old doesn’t look to stop any time soon after registering 29 starts and 2,550 minutes in 2013.
Low also owns the unofficial designation of the “Best Goal Celebration in RailHawks History” with the jersey-corner flag celebration in Rochester, NY. After scoring the game winner in the 90th minute, Low ran to the corner flag, hung his jersey on the corner flag pole, and waved it proudly. Watch the goal and celebration here.
