Capital Area RailHawks Academy and U-23 defender Conor Donovan was selected by Orlando City SC with the first pick in the second round in the MLS SuperDraft held last Thursday in Philadelphia. Additionally, the Houston Dynamo picked 23-year-old Rob Lovejoy and the Seattle Sounders drafted the Andy Craven.
Donovan, 19, has been part of both, the U-17 and U-20 USA Men's National Teams, earning 33 international caps and scoring three goals. Colin Clarke added Donovan to the RailHawks first team roster in 2013. However, his first appearance with the RailHawks senior team did not come until the summer of 2014 against two-time Mexican Champion, Puebla FC, in which Donovan scored the first goal and was declared player of the match. Conor recently completed his freshman season at NC State University.
"Conor showed he was up to the challenge. It was a great opportunity for us as well as for Conor," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "He always works hard, commits to the team and is willing to learn and listen. I think he is someone who has a bright future."
With the 15th pick of the second round, Houston Dynamo then snagged former RailHawks U-23 forward Rob Lovejoy. The Greensboro, NC native and former University of North Carolina forward made one national championship appearance with Triangle United and was part of the MLS Players Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Finally, another RailHawks U-23 player, University of North Carolina forward and MAC Herman Trophy finalist Andy Craven was taken by the Seattle Sounders with the sixth pick in round three of the Supplemental Draft held at MLS headquarters in New York, NY. Craven, 22, was a 2014 All-ACC First Team and NSCAA All-America First Team selection.
"We would like to congratulate another group of RailHawks U-23 players drafted by Major League Soccer. We are proud of Rob, Conor and Andy for their accomplishments and wish them all the best," said RailHawks U-23 Head Coach Dewan Bader.
