CARY, NC (June 25, 2021) – Two second-half goals lifted North Carolina FC to their first win of the season as John Bradford’s team defeated the visiting Richmond Kickers, 2-1. Max Flick and Jay Tee Kamara tallied the pair of goals, each notching their second goal of the season in Friday night’s contest. Emilio Terzaghi scored the lone goal for the Kickers.

“The locker room feels and sounds a little different tonight,” shared head coach John Bradford following the match. “To finally see out a lead and get three points means everything to this group and I couldn’t be happier for them. Our full club project was on display tonight with all professional and academy players giving everything they had to the game. The immediate response in the second half was everything. So happy for this group, and now we have to build on this going forward.”

Max Flick shared Bradford’s sentiments, saying, “It was an incredible feeling to help the team with a goal and get a win for the fans at home. Now we re-focus and prepare to get another three points next weekend at Tormenta.”

The Kickers added the first goal of the match, as an initial scoring attempt from a Richmond player ricocheted off of the crossbar and into a swarm of players from both sides. Chaos in the box ensued, as an NCFC defender was able to clear the ball out of the six. Unfortunately for the home squad, the clearance was intercepted inside the eighteen and played back in by Ivan Magalhaes, who found the head of Emiliano Terzaghi. The cross found Terzaghi in at close range, as the midfielder flicked in a header to give Richmond a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.

North Carolina FC answered with an equalizer early into the second half, the opportunity arising as NCFC was awarded a free kick for a foul on Cole Frame. Jay Tee Kamara took the kick, lofting a near-perfect ball into the Richmond box. Beating several defenders in an aerial duel, Max Flick buried a header past Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzpatrick to deadlock the match at a goal apiece. Flick’s goal was his second in two games, as the defender also tallied a goal in NCFC’s most recent contest against the Chattanooga Red Wolves.

With many core veteran members unavailable for the match, the young academy players were put to the test and made an impressive impact from the start. Though the result was not in favor of NCFC, the young squad’s performance showed promise for the future as Cole Frame and Max Flick each added their first goals of the season and NCFC Academy standout Nicholas Holliday earned the nod in net, making his first team debut in tonight’s contest, notching ten total saves. 

Holliday created a buzz around the league when he was named to the starting XI as he is just 15 years old. Despite the significant age gap between Holliday and the entirety of the Red Wolves’ roster, the young goalkeeper made five saves through the first half alone, keeping his squad competitive with Chattanooga. “I was excited to get the start, it’s something that I’ve been dreaming of for a long time,” Holliday shared after the match. “The result was unfortunate but it’s an experience that I’ll learn a lot from and take into my future. I’m just extremely blessed and grateful to be given the opportunity.”

Head coach John Bradford had high praise for Holliday’s efforts saying, “Nick was exceptional tonight and rose to the occasion with quality saves and presence in the goal. There is no replacement for the professional experience that he gained tonight and I was so proud to see him thrive.”

Frame, who was making a dashing run toward the Chattanooga eighteen, beat the defender on his back to bury a shot into the lower 90 and give NCFC an early advantage, 1-0. 

73’ Juan Galindrez (Mark Hernandez) – NCFC 1, CHA 1

The Red Wolves answered with a goal in the second half, with Mark Hernandez sending a long ball up top to Juan Galindrez. Settling the ball at his feet, Galindrez chipped in a shot to equalize for the Red Wolves, narrowly avoiding Holliday, who abandoned the net in an attempt to make the save. The goal was Galindrez’s third when coming off of the bench. 

88’ Juan Galindrez – NCFC 1, CHA 2

Galindrez tallied the brace in the 88th minute, when an unfortunate deflection off of an NCFC defender landed in his path inside the six. Galindrez’s goal allowed the Red Wolves to pull ahead late into the match, 2-1. 

90+2’ Mark Hernandez (Jackson Dietrich) – NCFC 1, CHA 3

Chattanooga’s third goal of the match came at the hands of Mark Hernandez and Jackson Dietrich. Taking the ball to the goal line, Dietrich threaded a cross into the NCFC box, finding Hernandez just outside the six. Now in at close range, Hernandez was able to turn on the ball and score his first goal of the season for the Red Wolves, rendering the score 3-1 in the early minutes of stoppage time. 

90+5’ Max Flick (Nelson Flores) – NCFC 2, CHA 3

Also scoring his first goal of the season was defender Max Flick, whose opportunity to join the scoresheet began with a set piece. A foul on Collin McCamy provided NCFC with a free kick in the 94th minute, as Luis Arriaga lofted a ball into the Chattanooga box. Chaos ensued, as the ball pinged between several NCFC players Flick was able to find the back of the net with a tactful volley. Nelson Flores was credited with the assist. Despite a fight for an equalizing goal in the final minutes, NCFC fell short of their East Coast opponents as the final whistle blew.

“I feel for the guys in our locker room tonight,” Head Coach John Bradford said. “ To lose on a late goal after battling down a man for as long as the guys did, I hate this for our group.  It was good to see more attacking chances created, but we know we need to finish better.  Other positives that we’ll take away will be the professional debut of Damian Las, who I thought played well this evening, as well as Curtis De Leon, who also got his professional debut tonight.”

“It’s just the little moments that we are letting take over the game,” NCFC midfielder Peter Pearson said. “We’re getting a ton of chances and we are starting to click but it’s just about finishing those chances. We had more than they did tonight, we just need to capitalize. It’s coming for us.”

Despite the result, the young team pieced together what was arguably one of their most impressive performances on offense this season. The combined efforts of Miščić, Thorn Simpson, and Jay Tee Kamara contributed to several scoring chances in the final third. North Carolina FC will look to add their first win against the Greenville Triumph next Wednesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. ET.

CARY, NC (May 29, 2021) – North Carolina FC was unable to find the equalizer on Saturday night, as the home side fell short, 1-2, in a physical match against FC Tucson. Selmir Miščić tallied the lone goal for NCFC in the opening minutes of the match, with Jay Tee Kamara earning the assist. Aaron Messer and Parker O’Ferral made their 18-man roster debut in tonight’s game, each of whom are members of the NCFC Academy. 

Getting things rolling for NCFC was Miščić, who received a pass from Kamara in the box following a missed block by the Tucson defense. Now at close range, Miščić cut the ball to his left foot, avoiding Tucson goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley, who abandoned his net in an attempt to make the save. Miščić tapped in an easy shot to the open net, scoring his second goal of the season and giving NCFC an early 1-0 lead in the 9th minute. Just two minutes later, Tucson added a goal of their own, finding the equalizer on a corner kick. 

The match was briefly interrupted in the 43rd minute due to a weather delay, but the teams later returned to the pitch to finish out the remaining two minutes of the first half. Then in the 50th minute, Tucson forward Gio Calixtro slid a backheel pass to teammate Manu Ferriol in the NCFC box. Ferriol converted the scoring chance to give Tucson a 2-1 lead in the early minutes of the second half, leaving ample time for the home team to find an equalizer. 

Despite a very physical, hard-fought finish, North Carolina FC was unable to find a game-tying goal as the final minutes ticked away. Between the two teams, five cards were administered — four yellow, one red — demanding composure from the young squad to finish out the contest. 

“[The loss] is not what we wanted,” NCFC Head Coach John Bradford said. “We had a lot of positive moments in the match, but certainly can’t find success when we don’t maintain our focus for full games. Our group is going through a tough period right now, but we will all stick together and continue to improve.” 

"It’s always very frustrating to not get a result especially at home," NCFC Captain Malick Mbaye said. "We were the better team on the ball, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if we have nothing to show for it. It is still early in the season and we know that if we continue to work hard, believe in each other, and stay united that the results will come very soon. That being said we have another opportunity next weekend to improve"

“I thought overall it was a good performance,” NCFC defender Nelson Flores said. “The match was full of possession. But we were very unlucky to not get a couple of goals. We will keep improving and getting better to try to make the fans happy and get the results we deserve. It’s only the beginning.”
