CARY, NC (December 6, 2021) – North Carolina FC announced today that veteran midfielder Pecka has signed a contract with the club for the 2022 season, returning in a transitional role. The deal is pending league and federation approval, as well as P1 Visa approval.

Pecka is returning to North Carolina FC with a blended role of professional transition and Academy coaching. The Brazilian international collected 19 appearances with the club last season, scoring a goal and receiving a nomination for USL League One Goal of the Week. 

“​​I am very happy to be back at NCFC, a big club with a great stadium and training facilities,” Pecka said. “I return to NCFC because I fully believe in the club project and that we are going to fight to be in the playoffs and win the league championship. I am happy for this challenge and it only motivates me more.”

The veteran was also selected by his teammates as the recipient of the Leadership Award, having sported the captain’s band in 11 of his 19 appearances.

“I’m excited to bring Pecka back into our roster as his experience and leadership will be vital to our group going forward,” said Head Coach John Bradford. “I’m also thrilled to bring him into our NCFC Academy staff, as he will have a great impact on our future players on the field and in their transition to the next phases of their careers, whether that be to college or to professional soccer.”

North Carolina FC has parted ways with Thorn Simpson as he returns to play in the Jamaican Premier League this month.

“I'd like to thank Thorn for his contributions this past season and wish him the best as he returns to Jamaica,” said Bradford.

“We are thrilled to add Raheem to our group for the 2022 season,” said Head Coach John Bradford. “He knows our club and area well and has valuable experience in USL League One and internationally with Saint Kitts and Nevis. I believe that his skillset and athleticism will help us in our midfield on both sides of the ball.”

A homegrown player, Somersall played for the North Carolina Alliance, a youth program formed between Triangle Football Club and the Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association prior to the formation of North Carolina FC Youth. The midfielder is also no stranger to USL League One, as he has three seasons of experience between South Georgia Tormenta FC and FC Tucson. While with Tormenta FC, the Basseterre native appeared in a total of twenty matches, clocking 1,174 minutes of playing time and making fourteen starts throughout the 2021 season. In his two-year stint with FC Tucson from 2019-2020, Somersall posted twenty appearances, collecting 1,342 minutes of playing time and adding an assist.

“I’m really excited to get to work,” Somersall said. “I want to say thank you to NCFC for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to being back in the Triangle where the journey all began. I am ready to start working hard and can’t wait for the season to get going.”

The 24-year-old also boasts international playing experience, debuting for the Saint Kitts and Nevis National Team in 2017 and since logging thirteen appearances for his country. Earlier this year, Somersall competed in a series of six World Cup qualifying matches, in two of which he was named team captain. Throughout the qualifiers, Somersall added two assists to lift his squad to three wins over Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Guyana.

Somersall played collegiately for Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina from 2015-2017, collecting 51 appearances and 2,035 minutes of playing time over three seasons with the Mountaineers, scoring one goal and assisting two. Following his junior year, the midfielder transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University for his senior season, where he started in fifteen of sixteen matches and logged 1,247 minutes of playing time, also earning a nod for ASUN Defensive Player of the Week.

The 22-year-old was named to the USL League One Team of the Week in Weeks 21, 28, and 29, and was subsequently called up to the El Salvadorian National Team, for which he made his debut in an international friendly on November 6. 

Likewise returning to the club, Luis Arriaga cemented his status as a valuable player in the attacking midfield last season. In 22 appearances, the Santa Rosa native collected a goal and two assists in 1,531 minutes of playing time, making his North Carolina FC debut in their season opener against Greenville Triumph SC. He also donned the captain’s band in two matches, displaying leadership characteristics both on and off the field.  

“I’m extremely excited to bring back Nelson Flores and Luis Arriaga to North Carolina FC,” said Head Coach John Bradford. “Nelson has grown well into his role as a left back and I’m sure his development will continue to accelerate with NCFC and internationally with El Salvador. Luis is a tremendous competitor and will build on a great 2021 with even more responsibility in our midfield in 2022.  We are happy to welcome these players back as we continue to build a strong roster for the upcoming season.”

Cary, NC (November 24, 2021) – North Carolina FC announced today that Max Flick and Nelson Martinez have signed new contracts for the 2022 season, with options for 2023, pending league and federation approval. 

Since joining NCFC in April of this year, Max Flick has made 25 appearances, scoring two goals and earning the honor of Defensive Player of the Year, as well as Most Valuable Player, voted on by the team. The 27-year-old defender has recorded several career firsts throughout his first season with the club, including his professional debut, his first professional start and his first professional goal, and was also named to the USL League One Team of the Week in Week 12 of the 2021 season. 

Nelson Martinez, a Woodbridge, VA native, logged 27 appearances for the club last season, scoring his first professional goal and adding an assist. Martinez was twice named to the USL League One Team of the Week and earned USL League One’s Goal of the Week in Week 21, also receiving a nomination for Goal of the Month. 

“We are excited to bring back Max and Nelson to NCFC for 2022, as both were important players for us in our 2021 season,” Head Coach John Bradford said. “Max grew tremendously in his first professional season and became a mainstay in our backline over the course of the season.  We are anticipating even more growth from Max going forward and I’m pleased to be able to continue working with him.”

After wrapping up player meetings and taking some time to reflect on the 2021 North Carolina FC season, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who made this year a memorable one, despite the many obstacles our team faced. No excuses for our failures — only genuine appreciation for the individual successes, the opportunity to be in the trenches together with good people, and a determined outlook for the future.

In January, our club made a transition to compete in USL League One, to better support a connection with our NCFC Youth Academy Program and to embark on a long-term project centered on player development. With no players signed as of February 1 and a limited budget compared to past seasons, we began to build a roster that would feature less overall professional players and include a combination of returning NCFC players, young professionals still early in their careers, and several players from our NCFC Youth Academy.

Getting players into the market, medical conditions, injuries, and other things have been real factors that greatly impacted our team from start to finish — all with already thin margins for error. We fielded a younger and less experienced roster than our opponents in all 28 games this season, yet our players always took on the challenge with pride and belief.

We have already started working on how we can improve every aspect of North Carolina FC for 2022 and I am excited about the future of our club. Our priorities for the upcoming year include an increased investment in our players and team, improved care for our players off the field, increased club communication on all the positive things happening with our players and team, increased interaction with fans and our community, as well as several others. We are actively working towards 2022 and look forward to sharing our progress.

That being said, throughout the season, we had several “firsts” and several positives that have given me a positive perspective to a challenging year.

Each of you found yourselves in a locker room unlike any of you had seen before – surrounded by youth and inexperience, but with eager ambition and positivity. You all created a special culture that we were fortunate to have. I loved watching each of you develop individually this year and know you’ll all be stronger for facing and enduring challenges together.

Naz, Robby, Pecka, and Malick should be commended on their sacrifices and selflessness to continue to give their all for a club they each love. Jake, Luis, Nelson F., Peter, Josh, Nelson M., Max, Malyk, Shermaine, Thorn, and Daniel should be recognized for their efforts in joining a club in transition and making positive impacts, while all individually continuing their development. Four high-level clubs believed in our club and staff to provide their players minutes and development this year, at various moments of the season. Jay Tee, Damian, Selmir, and Aziel were all big contributors to our team success throughout the season and developed well on their seasons on loan.

All fifteen NCFC Youth Academy players came into the First Team with a desire to compete and learn, and all did well in consistently challenging environments. Nicholas, Britton, and Cole will be known as the players that forever changed the professional pathway for our club and our Academy program.

Cary, NC (November 15, 2021) – The players of North Carolina FC have selected recipients for the NCFC Team Awards, the club announced today. Each of these honors — including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, the Leadership Award, Select PT Comeback Player of the Year, and the Team’s Most Valuable Player — are voted on exclusively by the players. The club would like to congratulate each of the players that earned a team award, which is indicative of their contribution to the team this season.

Offensive Player of the Year

Selmir Miscic was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, having appeared in 25 matches for North Carolina FC this season, clocking 1,423 minutes of playing time, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Defensive Player of the Year

Max Flick was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, and like Miscic, the defender also made 25 appearances throughout the season. In Week 12, Flick was named to the USL League One Team of the Week for his role in NCFC’s first win over the Richmond Kickers, in which he scored a goal, completed 81 passes and won seven duels.

Each of these honors — including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, the Leadership Award, Select PT Comeback Player of the Year, and the Team’s Most Valuable Player — are voted on exclusively by the players. The club would like to congratulate each of the players that earned a team award, which is indicative of their contribution to the team this season.

Selmir Miscic was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, having appeared in 25 matches for North Carolina FC this season, clocking 1,423 minutes of playing time, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Cary, NC (November 3, 2021) – North Carolina FC defender Nelson Flores has been called to the El Salvador National Team for an international friendly against Bolivia, the club announced today. The match will be played at Audi Field in Washington, DC on Friday, November 5 at 8 p.m. ET. 

“This call-up means everything to my family and to me,” Flores said. “To have the chance to represent the country that I love and the place I was born, it means the world. It’s truly an honor, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Head Coach John Bradford, Mike McGinty and the whole NCFC staff. They’ve helped my development and growth as a player throughout this season and I’m truly thankful and blessed for this opportunity.”

Flores signed a contract with North Carolina FC in late March of this season and has since made 27 appearances with the squad, clocking 2,247 minutes of playing time and notching three assists throughout the season. The Salvadorian international made his season debut with the squad in their first match against Greenville Triumph SC and was also named to the USL League One Team of the Week three times this season, earning the accolade in Weeks 21, 28, and 29.

Puerto Rico is a member of Group C and will compete against Barbados, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Monserrate, and Bermuda during the month of November for a World Cup berth.

Marios Lomis and Allen Gavilanes each added a goal apiece to seal the result for the Triumph, but the North Carolina side was able to hold their opponent scoreless throughout the second half. Though the result was not in favor of the home side, match highlights included a strong performance from second-half substitutes Selmir Miscic and Robby Kristo, as well as Kristo’s final appearance with North Carolina FC ahead of his retirement from outdoor professional soccer. 

“I want to send a huge thank you to all my current and former teammates, coaches, and especially the fans that have been on this journey with me,” Kristo said in a statement released via his social media on Wednesday. “My teammates throughout my career have become like brothers to me and I will always consider them family. To Mike McGinty, John Bradford, and Nic Platter – I want to personally thank you for giving me this opportunity and continuing to believe in me.”

Marios Lomis opened the scoring for the visitors in the 18th minute, the play beginning on a leading ball from the Triumph defense to forward Lachlan McLean. On his first touch, McLean slotted a ball to the former North Carolina FC player, who one-timed a shot into the lower 90 to give the Triumph a 1-0 advantage.
