North Carolina FC Strengthens Roster With Re-Signing of Marcel Kandziora, Steven Miller

CARY, N.C. (Jan. 2, 2018) – North Carolina FC continues to add quality to its 2018 roster, as it brings back two key starters from 2017 with the additions of Marcel Kandziora and Steven Miller for the 2018 USL season, pending league and federation approval.

Both players made big contributions for the club in 2017, helping the team reach the postseason for the first time since 2012.

After overcoming an injury that kept him sidelined during the beginning of the season, Kandziora provided an edge to NCFC’s defensive midfield. He logged 972 minutes in 15 matches across all competitions in 2017. He also scored one goal, netting a long-range strike against Miami FC on Aug. 5.

“I’m very grateful and happy to join the NCFC family again,” said Kandziora. “I am confident that we will have a great team for the USL. I look forward to playing another season with my teammates and working with the staff to reach our goals.”

Miller was a versatile and consistent piece in the club’s lineup throughout the 2017 season. After playing much of the season at right back, Miller moved forward and played on the right wing during the final stretch of the season. Overall, Miller logged 2,436 minutes in 27 matches, while adding five goals and three assists in 2017, including a stunning strike from distance against the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 14.

This year will mark Miller’s third full season with the club. In total, the fan favorite returns as one of the most tenured players in the squad. He’s logged 47 appearances and played 4,098 minutes across all competitions.

“I’m really excited to be back with the club and to play in front of our supporters,” said Miller. “Personally, I have some unfinished business after missing the semifinal last season. I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing in the USL. We want to be a contender, and that’s why I’m back here. We want to win games, make the playoffs and make a run at bringing a championship back to Raleigh.”

North Carolina FC Welcomes Former Liga MX Goalkeeper Austin Guerrero to 2018 Roster

CARY, N.C. (Dec. 15, 2017) – North Carolina FC has bolstered its goalkeeping position with the signing of former Liga MX goalkeeper Austin Guerrero. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Austin is a goalkeeper we’ve known for quite some time,” said NCFC Goalkeeper Coach Nic Platter. “He trained with the club about five years ago, but the timing wasn’t right. Since then, he’s spent his time playing in Mexico and Panama, and has improved his game as a professional. Austin will be an exciting goalkeeper to watch, as he is a solid shot stopper and his distribution suits our style of play. We look forward to having Austin for the 2018 season.”

Following a storied youth and college career in the United States, Guerrero took his talents to Central America where he developed his skills with multiple teams in Mexico and Panama.

“I’m looking forward to making North Carolina my home,” said Guerrero. “There is an obvious passion for soccer in the region, and the fan’s energy and appreciation are what inspire me to play the game.”

The goalkeeper spent last season with Alianza FC of Liga Panameña de Fútbol – the top tier of soccer in Panama. While playing for Alianza FC, Guerrero logged 1170 minutes in 13 appearances for the side.

Prior to his time in the Panamanian league, Guerrero played with three clubs in Mexico including Liga MX sides Puebla and Tigres UANL and Ascenso MX side Altamira FC.

Guerrero made the move to Mexico in 2012 and signed with Tigres after a highly successful college career with the University of Portland. After splitting time with Tigres II and the first team, Guerrero was loaned to Altamira FC (now Cafetaleros de Tapachula), where he played over 2,000 minutes in 25 matches in Ascenso MX – the second division of Mexican soccer. The goalkeeper was also loaned to fellow Liga MX side Puebla in 2016, but saw limited action before making the move to Alianza FC in Panama for the 2017 season.

Guerrero spent his college career playing for the Portland Pilots from 2007 to 2010. He concluded his college career as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Portland’s history. He was a three-time All-WCC First Team selection and became Pilot’s all-time leader in saves with 346. Guerrero made one appearance for the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team in 2008, earning a shutout in a 0-0 (4-2 PK) win against Honduras.

George Marks, D.J. Taylor Return to NCFC for 2018 Season

CARY, N.C. (Dec. 14, 2017) – North Carolina FC has announced more signings for the 2018 season with the additions of NCFC Youth Academy products George Marks and D.J. Taylor, pending league and federation approval. Both players return for a second season with Marks signing an Academy Contract for the second consecutive year. Per club policy, further details on the deal were not released.

“We’re excited to bring back D.J. and George,” said North Carolina FC President and GM Curt Johnson. “Both are exceptional players who developed in our academy system, showing the strength of our youth programs. We look forward to their contributions next season.”

Both signings help reinforce a development pipeline between North Carolina FC and NCFC Youth Academy. The players are part of the first group of signings since NCFC joined the United Soccer League (USL) in November, paired with the return of Austin da Luz announced earlier today. The move to USL puts the club in one of the most prominent Division II professional soccer leagues in the world, which enjoys a strong partnership with MLS and will reestablish regional rivalries that have existed since the 1990s.

Marks is a local product who came through NCFC Youth and debuted for the Academy in 2015. He’s the starting goalkeeper for the NCFC U19s and has played in 48 matches with the Academy since 2015.

“I’m really happy to be back for another year with the club,” said Marks. “Last year was a major year for me, as I learned a lot from the older guys and earned some time on the bench towards the end of the year. This year I really look forward to being part of the team and pushing to contribute.”

Marks spent the 2017 season developing in NCFC’s goalkeeping unit. He appeared on the bench in five contests in 2017, but did not play in an official match.

Development academy players are eligible to train and sign Academy contracts with professional soccer teams prior to their enrollment in college and keep their NCAA eligibility. Marks has committed to attend Clemson University in Fall 2018.

Taylor is also set to rejoin North Carolina FC for 2018. The promising right back played in two league matches for the club last year, totaling 133 minutes. He also saw time as a guest player in North Carolina FC’s international exhibition against Swansea City AFC this summer prior to signing with the club.

Taylor is a Raleigh, N.C., native and played in the NCFC Youth Academy system from 2012-15. Taylor also earned time with the United States U-18 National Team in 2015. He appeared in two matches and scored one goal at the Copa Chivas Tournament.

Following his academy career, Taylor signed an amateur contract with NCFC in May of 2015. Taylor did not appear in a match, but trained with the first team before moving to Spain, where he played professionally with FC Torre Levante of the Tercera Division for two seasons.

Marks and Taylor are the first two signings for the 2018 season. North Carolina FC will continue to add to its roster and expects to have more player announcements in the coming days.

Da Luz is a Wake Forest University product that helped guide the Demon Deacons to four College Cup appearances and a national title in 2007. After three years in the MLS with stops at DC United and New York Red Bulls, da Luz joined NCFC in 2012. After a stint with Orlando City in 2014, the midfielder returned and has remained with the club.

The veteran midfielder is not only a key contributor on the pitch, but has consistently shown leadership in the community. Last season, da Luz was named NASL Humanitarian of the Year for creating Playing for Pride, a global fundraiser to benefit the Human Rights Campaign and draw attention to LGBTQ issues. NCFC Youth Academy Closes Out 2017 at Winter Showcase

The NCFC Youth Academy wrapped up its biggest competition of the season so far at the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy Winter Showcase in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., last week. The event, which drew in 76 U17 and 72 U19 Boys' Academy clubs from across the country, featured some of the highest levels of competition the NCFC Academy sides have faced all season. The NCFC Youth Academy teams held their own on the big stage, compiling a combined record of 2W-3L-1D.

NCFC U19 produced several impressive results during the weekend, defeating playoff-contenders Oakwood SC 2-1 in the opening match behind goals from Orlin Roque and Robert Screen. The U19s faced a 2-0 setback against San Jose Earthquakes U19 before closing out the Showcase with a thrilling 4-3 victory over FC Golden State.

While missing many key players in the final match, the U19s went toe-to-toe with the California side with early goals from Parker Cross and Miles Peay. However, Golden State eventually took a 3-2 lead that held through the 80th minute. With time winding down, Screen converted a penalty to level the match in the 84th minute, and Peay scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give NCFC U19 the victory and end the showcase on a high note.

The U17’s faced tougher results, but have returned to Raleigh with wealth of experience after playing meaningful games against teams with contrasting styles. The U17s opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against Real So Cal with goals from Justin Stone and Adam Armour.

The group faced arguably the team-of-the-showcase in New York City FC in the second game. Despite falling behind 3-0 after the first half, NCFC clawed its way back into the match with goals from Stone and Cameron Abernethy. NCFC had a chance in the final minute to equalize, but couldn’t convert the opportunity and New York escaped with the points.

The squad then found themselves on the end of another tough result, as Sacramento Republic FC converted a pair of counter-attack goals and held on for a 2-1 victory in the final match. Despite the result, Stone continued his great individual performance and scored for the third consecutive match in the showcase.

The Academy has officially wrapped up competition for 2017 and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27. Through the first half of the Developmental Academy season, NCFC is in playoff position with its U19 and U17 teams. The U15 side also has a strong shot to qualify for the postseason and is just one result from jumping into a wildcard position.

The North Carolina Football Club took the next step in the #919toMLS campaign by submitting an official bid to enter the expansion process.

March 10, 2017 – CASL and TFCA Enter Historic Strategic Collaboration with North Carolina FC

The club entered a historic collaboration with CASL and TFCA to create NCFC Youth, the largest youth-to-professional soccer club in the United States. The move added nearly 14,000 members to the club and completed the team’s youth-to-pro ladder.

North Carolina FC hosted its first match wearing the new crest and colors at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. While Altas FC walked away with a narrow 2-1 victory, the New State of Soccer had officially started in front of a crowd of more than 8,000 people.

April 22, 2017 – NC Courage Makes Home Debut in Front of Record Crowd

After opening the season with 1-0 victory at the Washington Spirit, the home fans got to witness the NC Courage for the first time. The team didn’t disappoint and added a 1-0 victory in front of more than 6,000 fans.

Samantha Mewis recorded her first-ever brace for the national team in front of her home fans, while Abby Dahlkemper added an assist and Lynn Williams also scored a goal.

RALEIGH (Nov. 29, 2017) – Since the rebrand on Dec. 6, 2016, the North Carolina Football Club has been working hard to bring a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise to Raleigh. While the club is not among the four finalists to be awarded one of the first two expansion spots, the vision and plan to bring the MLS to Raleigh is still in place. North Carolina FC is firmly in the running for the final two expansion slots which will be selected from the 10 remaining expansion markets.

For North Carolina Football Club Owner Steve Malik, the bid has always been a calculated process, carefully working out the details to ensure the progress is genuine and completed correctly. As Malik has said many times before, “It’s not if, but when.”

The tangible evidence that the team has accomplished in less than a year has been substantial. From the addition of the NC Courage – one of the best women’s professional soccer franchises in the world, the collaboration to create the largest youth-to-professional club in the country with the creation of NCFC Youth, extending the club's footprint in the community and growing fan and corporate support, NCFC is clinically checking off the boxes that MLS has prioritized for expansion teams.

The work the club has completed in the last year has produced a strong foundation for it to stand on, as it continues to represent an area deeply ingrained in the soccer culture of the United States. Most recently, North Carolina FC joined the United Soccer League (USL) ahead of the 2018 season and will compete in one of the most prominent Division II professional soccer leagues in the world, which enjoys a strong partnership with MLS and will reestablish regional rivalries that have existed since the 1990s.

One of North Carolina Football Club’s biggest projects to finish is the downtown Raleigh entertainment, sports and athletics complex deal, which will be a crown jewel for the Raleigh community and revitalize the North end of downtown Raleigh. The project is expected to bring more than $2 billion to the state over several years.

With the complexity of the project, it has taken time to work out the many details that include infrastructure improvements to roads and highways, tearing down buildings, relocating government workers and planning for the new additions of office space, restaurants and a stadium with more than 20,000 seats. The club has had numerous encouraging conversations with members from local and state government that signify a solution to completing the deal is attainable.

“We came forward with a plan that was downtown,” said Malik. “We knew that it was going to be more challenging. It’s a state property and there is a state government complex on the land. People have a lot of questions about that, but generally the response has been super positive. At the same time, they’ve wanted to have detailed questions answered.

We’ve had numerous meetings that have gone well with a lot of different parties. This is a long-term project and I think we’ve made a lot of progress. We’ve been engaged in the process and we’re going to continue to make progress on our site.”

The work on will continue as a completed stadium deal will make Raleigh’s bid for the MLS among the strongest out of the remaining 10 expansion candidates at the start of 2018. The selected site meets all of MLS’ requirements with a soccer specific grass field in a dense urban core rich with the proper targeted soccer fan demographics all while growing rapidly.

In addition to finishing the stadium deal, the club is also putting a strong focus on increasing attendance and drumming up additional corporate support.

Let your elected officials know that you value an MLS franchise and want to see one awarded to the Triangle. Let them know how you think a new downtown entertainment and sports center would contribute to the quality of life of the Triangle. Write letters and call in to your politicians.

North Carolina Football Club Statement on First Round of MLS Expansion

“Major League Soccer (MLS) announced four finalists for the next two expansion teams, which will be awarded soon. While North Carolina FC was not among the initial group of markets, MLS has indicated that the club is in consideration for the remaining two expansion spots which will be announced at a later date.

North Carolina FC remains committed to pursuing a MLS franchise and is continuing to work diligently to secure a stadium in downtown Raleigh. Momentum for the project continues to build and we look forward to continued dialogue with the community and with MLS as we demonstrate why the Triangle should be home to a franchise.”

NCFC Academy Closes Out Fall Season, Prepares for Winter Showcase

The North Carolina FC Youth Academy has wrapped up the first half of the year with a successful Fall season. Entering the mid-year break from regional play, the Academy’s U17 and U19 teams are in playoff contention for the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy Playoffs this summer and the U15 team is just one result away from moving back into a playoff-qualifying position.

The club’s U12-14 squads have reached the mid-season break and will look ahead to the Spring after an extremely successful Fall campaign. Highlighted by a strong showing at the Developmental Academy’s East Conference Boys' Regional Showcase, NCFC’s U13 and U14 teams enjoyed a weekend in the spotlight with college coaches and U.S. Soccer scouts in attendance at BB&T Park in Advance, N.C.

The young NCFC teams held their own against top-level competition from across the East Coast – including several MLS academy teams. Overall, the Academy went 3W-4L-4D in the showcase. The South U14 boys highlighted the weekend by going undefeated and notching wins over FC Westchester Armour U14, Empire United U14 and Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth U14. The team didn’t allow a goal and outscored its competition 11-0 on the weekend.

The Academy’s older sides have also concluded regional play for the Fall season and will now shift their focus to the Winter Showcase. The nationally-regarded event will take place at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., from Nov. 30-Dec. 11 and feature 76 U17 and 72 U19 Boys' Academy clubs from across the country.

The Academy’s U17 and U19 teams are slated to play three matches each. The U17’s schedule will feature a battle against MLS Academy side New York City FC and the U19’s will meet the San Jose Earthquakes to highlight their schedules. All three matches will be big tests for the squads to measure up against top talent from around the country.

On A Run: NCFC Players College Teams in the Sweet 16

The NCAA’s 2017 Division-I Men’s Soccer Championship is in full swing. After a quick start to the tournament saw its opening field of 48 teams reduced to 16 teams by the end of the weekend, only five college teams of current NCFC players remain. ACC programs, Wake Forest (Austin da Luz), UNC (Billy Schuler) and Duke (Christian Ibeagha) are still in, while Akron (Brad Ruhaak) and Colgate (Steven Miller) are also battling to make the College Cup.

The No. 1 overall seed, Wake Forest, is well represented by Austin da Luz, who attended the university from 2006-2009. Da Luz knows a thing or two about making a title run, as his squad claimed the 2007 National Championship. In this year's tournament, Wake Forest earned a first-round bye and then defeated Columbia with a late goal to book its spot in the third round. The Demon Deacons are riding a 17-match unbeaten streak and will face Butler on Sunday, Nov. 26 at Spry Stadium in Winston Salem, N.C., at 5 p.m. ET.

Billy Schuler’s alma mater, UNC, is also still alive. Schuler played with UNC from 2008-2011 and helped his team win the 2011 College Cup. This year’s No. 3 seeded Tar Heels earned a first-round bye and defeated UNC Wilmington 2-1 to advance to the Sweet 16. The Tar Heels will face SMU, who advanced out of the first round. The match will be played Saturday, Nov. 25 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., at 6 p.m. ET.

Duke will also host a home match in third round, as Christian Ibeagha’s Blue Devils held on to advance past FIU with a 2-1 result. Ibeagha attended Duke from 2007-2010, advancing to the NCAA Tournament every year. The No. 6 seeded Blue Devils will host Fordham on Saturday, Nov. 25 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C., at 6 p.m. ET.

Outside of the local ACC schools, Brad Ruhaak’s Akron team handled the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament with ease. After a first-round bye, Akron zipped past Seattle 3-0. Akron will face Wisconsin on Saturday, Nov. 25 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio at 4 p.m. ET. Ruhaak was at Akron from 2012-2016. After redshirting his first season, Ruhaak made the NCAA Tournament every season he played with the Zips.

In one of the best stories of the tournament, Steven Miller’s Colgate team has embraced the Cinderella role. Following upset wins over UMass and 13th-seeded Michigan, Colgate will take on No. 4 seeded Louisville on Sunday, Nov. 26 at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky., at 5 p.m. ET. Miller attended Colgate from 2007-2011. During his storied career, he captured nearly every Patriot League Award possible and led his side to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, 2008 and 2011.
